🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Random Group Generator

Split a list of names into random groups — by number of groups, or by how many people per group.

How to use the random group generator

  1. Enter or paste names, one per line.
  2. Choose to split by number of groups or by people per group, then set the amount.
  3. Click Generate groups — click again any time for a fresh shuffle.

Where random groups help

Random grouping keeps things fair and mixes people up: breakout rooms and workshops, classroom project groups and lab benches, tournament pools, icebreaker rounds, and dividing a big crowd into manageable teams. Splitting by size is ideal when a station or activity fits exactly a certain number of people. Because it runs in your browser, your list stays on your device.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the team generator?

The team generator always splits people into a set number of teams. This group generator can do that too, but it can also split by group size — for example "groups of 4" — which is handy when each group needs a fixed number of people rather than a fixed number of groups.

What happens when it does not divide evenly?

Groups are kept as even as possible. Splitting by number of groups spreads any extras across the first groups; splitting by size fills groups to the target and leaves any remainder in a smaller final group.

Is the assignment fair?

Yes. Names are shuffled with a fair Fisher–Yates shuffle before being grouped, so every arrangement is equally likely and nobody can claim it was rigged.

Is my list uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser and your list is only remembered on your own device, never sent to a server.
